Americans are spending hundreds to learn how to leave the U.S.
89% say they wish to leave the US for “political reasons”. Which implies they do not like democracy when the electorate chooses policies differing from their preferred policies. Indeed, one of the story’s anecdotal subjects says he might stay depending on the outcome of the next election.
Imagine a country where the citizens are so privileged they can just move to another at each election result. Amazing!
Reminder
An estimated 1.6% of Americans live abroad at any point in time, which is close to zero percent.
About 40% of Americans who live abroad are living in Mexico or Canada. About 20% are living in Europe.
About 2/3ds of those who move abroad do so because they (a) had prior dual citizenship, (b) have a right of descent ancestry privilege – notably Italy, Ireland and now Canada, or (c) they are an educated American woman who married a foreigner (one of the largest categories).
An estimated 1.0% (+/-) of Americans retire abroad and about half of those had prior close connections to the destination country (prior dual citizenship, family living there already and a right of descent residency privilege, or, they were working abroad in the country and chose to retire where they already own their home).
