Some want the U.S. to ban short haul flights of less than 500 miles, as has been done in France. There you are supposed to take a train: Could France’s ban on short-haul flights spread to the U.S.? – The Washington Post
It appears to be unrealistic for the U.S. – It’s 300 miles for me to get to Seattle, but an all day drive. That would add the extra cost of an additional hotel night at both ends of the trip. There is no rail option.
Further, these restrictions would have no measurable impact on climate. In other words, the harms would greatly exceed the benefits.
(The “climate reporter” for WaPo who seems sympathetic to air travel restrictions. She’s from the U.S., but did her graduate degree at the University of Oxford. And since she lists language skills in Japanese and French, there is a probability she’s traveled internationally as well.)
