The odd evolution of inflated job titles

The odd evolution of inflated job titles

  • Reporter -> Journalist
  • Teacher -> Educator
  • Sales Rep -> Account Executive
  • Personnel -> Human Resources -> Human Resources Officer, Chief Talent Officer, Chief People Officer
  • Recruiter -> Talent acquisition
  • Customer Service Rep -> Support Engineer
  • Computer programmer -> Software Engineer
  • PC Tech-> Network administrator
  • Janitor or Custodian -> Sanitation or Waste Removal engineer
  • Copywriter -> Narrative architect
  • Marketing Manager -> Web (or related) Evangelist
  • Social Media Manager -> Social media rockstar
  • Office Manager -> Chief of Staff
  • mid-Sales Manager -> Chief Revenue Officer
  • Blogger -> Content writer -> Chief Storyteller
  • “Anything” -> Lead or principle “anything”, similarly “Senior” as “Senior reporter”.

Inflated titles can be seen as a job perk. In some cases, the change may reflect changes in the job’s work approach and output, or training. While some are random virtue signaling that we are hip -> Chief Happiness Officer
