Retire to New Zealand?
Reality check: You need to invest almost $500,000 in the country and prove you have another boatload of income for the privilege of staying there a maximum of two years. That’s more of an ultra-expensive, long vacation than a retirement.
Retire to Australia?
Um, they quit issuing retirement visas in 2018.
Retire to Mexico?
the Mexican government recently raised income requirements for permanent residency to at least $7,300 per month, far beyond what most retirees can prove.
Portugal?
Portugal, the new kid on the block, is currently suffering from sticker shock in expat hot spots like Lisbon due to an acute housing shortage.
Canada? (My addition to their list)
Canada currently prohibits those without existing permanent residency status from buying property in Canada.
Except for perhaps 20-25 countries, it is difficult for Americans who lack an immigration privilege to move to other countries.
