The commentary is that Americans have bigger homes, because Americans have higher incomes and a better standard of living:
Others note that Americans can live like Kings in many parts of the world because of the very strong U.S. dollar. Americans tend to have income in U.S. dollars and then get to spend them in a country where the currency exchange strongly favors the value of the dollar- thus the local economy is inexpensive to Americans but not cheap for locals who earn income in the local currency.
I have zero experience living outside the U.S. so am unable to have a useful perspective on whether the above is true or not. I have spent one 2-week vacation trip in the Netherlands, and one 3-week vacation trip (1-week in Iceland, 2 weeks in Norway) – which is so short as to teach me little.
