3D: Instagram videos/photos in 3D in Meta Quest VR headset app

I’ve had a Meta Quest VR headset for a couple of months but today was the first time that I used the VR Instagram app. Much to my surprise, Meta’s IG VR app does a very good AI-based 2D to 3D conversion of videos and still photos!

I really like it! If you have a Meta Quest VR headset, you just need to run the Instagram app.

If you don’t have the Meta Quest VR headset, then buy one!

I have not yet uploaded content specifically to take advantage of this but I understand the conversion is automatic, provide it is a sufficiently high resolution video.

Is VR dead?

Meta (Facebook) is laying off 10% of its Reality Labs group, including many in the VR space.

Is VR – which was going to be the next great thing after 3D died – now on its own downhill slide?

The thing is, there’s a chance that VR was never really meant to be such a massive category. As great as the experience can be, these aren’t devices that most people want to use all the time, and any company pitching one that way (looking at you, Apple Vision Pro) hasn’t really gained much traction. What if—and hear me out—VR wasn’t meant to go mainstream? Maybe it’s just a niche thing, and that’s okay?
