Venice has already done this. New Zealand has done this. Croatia has a 7 Euro per day per person fee<\/a> and Dubrovnik is putting a tax on cruise ships<\/a> (which will pass through to tourists, of course).<\/p>\n

Norway has proposed a fee on visitors to the Svalbard Islands. Now, Norway is proposing tax fees per municipality at various towns and cities throughout Norway. Norway is already one of the most expensive countries in the world to visit.<\/p>\n

New Zealand’s tourism head said they want fewer tourists, spending more money and staying longer. They want the tourists that go on charter boat trips, white water boat trips, helicopter tours and go skiing at downhill resorts, stay at upscale hotels and eat at expensive restaurants.<\/p>\n

They want wealthy tourists with lots of time, spending lots of money on entertainment, rather than traditional travel.<\/p>\n

The Golden Era of travel is over, post-pandemic.<\/p>\n

Next up – carbon taxes and carbon offset fees. Some airlines and countries already charge these. Travel will be for the global elite and not so much for the rest of us.<\/p>\n

Update: Areas charging tourist taxes in 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many cities and countries<\/a> are now adding fees to hotel accommodations as a tourist tax. Others assess fees directly, and some countries charge exorbitant prices for visas. Some are charges per person, per day. Some are charged a onetime fee for the entire duration of the visit.<\/p>\n

Norway is proposing adding a tax on tourists, perhaps by municipality, as soon as 2024.
