The 9 Million Figure Is Going Away<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nobody Actually Knows How Many Americans Live Abroad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/dam\/travel\/CA-By-the-Number-2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long-cited estimate<\/a>\u00a0was 9 million<\/strong>, attributed to a 2016 State Department calculation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The State Department has stopped standing behind that figure<\/strong>, citing the absence of authoritative source data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aaro.org\/living-abroad\/how-many-americans-live-abroad\">Independent estimates cluster between 4 and 5.5 million<\/a><\/strong>, roughly half the long-cited number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The U.S. government does not count its citizens abroad<\/strong>, and the Census Bureau excludes them from the decennial count.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Per the link, above, the inflated 9 million figure might have been intentionally or unintentionally used to imply tax evasion by US citizens living abroad.
