About 40% are in Mexico or Canada.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1% is close to zero percent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those who leave the US lose access to Medicare unless they return to the U.S. If they stop paying Medicare Part B premiums, but later return, they are then subjected to a permanent annual penalty fee.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those who leave the US may be subject to double taxation as the US is one of only 2 countries in the world that taxes citizens regardless of their living outside their country (in some cases, tax treaties may reduce the tax burden for income but not capital gains or estate taxes).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some countries (like Australia, NZ &#8211; prohibit residency visas for those over a certain age &#8211; like 50 &#8211; and some like Canada use a points based system where you lose points for a visa over a certain age).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The myth of Americans &#8220;flocking&#8221; or &#8220;surging&#8221; to other countries to retire continues each week &#8211; and mostly tells us how horrible the media has become, actively promoting a myth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More on the media myth that Americans are all retiring in Europe.
