{"id":4920,"date":"2025-03-02T22:08:56","date_gmt":"2025-03-03T06:08:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coldstreams.com\/travel\/?p=4920"},"modified":"2025-03-07T13:09:13","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T21:09:13","slug":"hah-hah-americans-are-moving-to-spain-in-droves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coldstreams.com\/travel\/2025\/03\/02\/hah-hah-americans-are-moving-to-spain-in-droves\/","title":{"rendered":"Hah hah-&#8220;Americans are moving to Spain in droves&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-express.com\/news\/us-news\/133669\/american-couple-healthcare-spain-shocked-cheap-bill\"><br>The US expat population in Spain<\/a>&nbsp;has soared by 25% over the last two years, reaching a new high of 50,000 residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-express.com\/news\/world-news\/165036\/americans-moving-to-spain-immigration\">Americans are moving to Spain in droves and one expat says &#8216;it&#8217;s very sad to see&#8217; &#8211; World News &#8211; News &#8211; Daily Express US<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>To put that in perspective,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1% of the US population is 3, 360,000 people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>0.1% is 336,000<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>0.01% is 33,600<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus 0.015% of the US population has moved to Spain, which is, compared to the US population, basically zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, the media elite hate the United States &#8230; Their constant doomerism is stupid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Update <\/strong>&#8211; here&#8217;s another silly one &#8211; guy thinks he&#8217;s retiring to Canada from the U.S. &#8220;for cheaper health care&#8221; without understanding that <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(a) He needs a permanent residency visa to qualify for the Canadian government funded health care, without it, he needs to buy health insurance and pay privately, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(b) he is unlikely to get a visa unless he is younger and has in demand skills and a job offer (Canada has a points system that deducts points for each year over age 40) &#8211; but since he&#8217;s talking about retirement, he&#8217;s probably age 60+.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(c) he will likely need to demonstrate French language proficiency (especially since he will lose points for his age), <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(d) contrary to the story&#8217;s claim, he cannot buy property in Canada due to their current 2 year moratorium on property purchases by non-permanent residents,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(e) may be he can make a large financial investment to purchase an investment visa (but since he&#8217;s concerned about Social Security and IRA issues when living in Canada, it is doubtful he has sufficient funds).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(f) Canada&#8217;s cost of living is significantly higher than in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/retirement\/i-m-thinking-about-retiring-in-canada-for-the-lower-healthcare-costs-what-are-the-big-steps-to-make-that-happen-and-how-will-my-social-security-401-k-and-ira-work-across-borders\/ar-AA1A9V02?ocid=windirect&amp;cvid=7d39b9037f8c4171de0f8011be170360&amp;ei=134\">I\u2019m thinking about retiring in Canada for the lower healthcare costs \u2014 what are the big steps to make that happen and how will my Social Security, 401(k) and IRA work across borders?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do Americans think they can move anywhere they want in the world?
