{"id":4121,"date":"2024-10-21T16:19:30","date_gmt":"2024-10-21T23:19:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coldstreams.com\/travel\/?p=4121"},"modified":"2024-12-08T11:35:11","modified_gmt":"2024-12-08T19:35:11","slug":"if-their-candidate-does-not-win-they-will-leave-the-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coldstreams.com\/travel\/2024\/10\/21\/if-their-candidate-does-not-win-they-will-leave-the-u-s\/","title":{"rendered":"If their candidate does not win, they will leave the U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Up to 1 in 3 voters say they will leave the U.S. if their candidate does not win the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reality<\/strong>: Almost no one will leave, and those that do, already had immigration privileges and their dedication to the U.S. was never that strong anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today&#8217;s silly news story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/18\/us\/politics\/these-americans-say-theyll-move-abroad-if-their-candidate-loses.html\">These Americans Say They\u2019ll Move Abroad if Their Candidate Loses &#8211; The New York Times<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The very first anecdote is someone eligible for dual citizenship in Germany! Hah hah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2nd one &#8211; a real estate developer &#8211; is probably looking at an investment visa, available to the wealthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 3rd example is a transgender related couple who already moved to Vietnam &#8211; notably, they appeared in a prior story by the paper. Thus, <strong><em>they are not &#8220;going to move&#8221; &#8211; they already left!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 4th one is a doctor, <em>who had already moved to B.C. <\/em>(Doctors, especially, have easy access to move to most countries &#8211; unlike everyone else.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Refreshingly, this story notes the problem: &#8220;<strong><em>It\u2019s relatively easy to vacation abroad as an American, but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/06\/realestate\/moving-abroad-americans-guide.html\">obtaining residency in another country<\/a>&nbsp;is far more complicated<\/em><\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another one &#8211; these people are weird: <a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/inews-lifestyle\/trump-leave-america-europe-fear-future-3268690\">If Trump wins, I&#8217;ll leave America for Europe \u2013 but my husband will stay behind<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: Another story on this topic: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/11\/01\/wealthy-americans-plans-leaving-united-states.html\">Record numbers of wealthy Americans are making plans to leave the U.S.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A survey by Arton Capital, which advises the wealthy on immigration programs, found that 53% of American millionaires say they\u2019re more likely to leave the U.S. after the election, no matter who wins. Reminder &#8211; an estimated 2-3% of Americans are living abroad at any point in time, and perhaps half of these are temporary &#8211; including work assignments, military assignments, and study abroad. Between 0.7% and 1.2% of retirees live abroad, with over 1\/3d of those in either Canada or Mexico &#8211; about half retired abroad because they had family connections or they had long established ties to the country, such as working in Canada for years and owning a home, etc, prior to retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And finally &#8211; Canada has instituted new restrictions on inbound immigration and is prohibiting the purchase of real estate by anyone not already having permanent residency status in Canada! Hah!
