Consequently, <em>in Denmark&#8217;s equality culture, there may be little incentive to go to college unless the government provides free education and pays students to attend universities.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conscription_in_Denmark\">Denmark has mandatory military service requirements for most healthy young adult males who are required to participate<\/a>. Those who do not meet health standards may have alternative optional service opportunities in either the military or government service. Service lasts from 4 to 12 months. Young women are exempt from the mandatory service but may volunteer. Some have noted that in some ways, free education may be a form of compensation for service. About 99% of those who serve do so voluntarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FREE UNIVERSITY TUITION<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>College is free and Denmark pays students a stipend to attend college!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>University Bachelor&#8217;s degrees are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.euroeducation.net\/prof\/denmarco.htm\">3 years (not 4 as in the U.S.)<\/a>; some &#8220;Professional Bachelor&#8221; degrees are <a href=\"http:\/\/studyindenmark.dk\/study-options\/study-options\">3 to 4 1\/2 years in duration<\/a>. The Danish college system is different than the U.S. system.\u00a0 The U.S. also spends <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keepeek.com\/Digital-Asset-Management\/oecd\/education\/education-at-a-glance-2015\/united-states_eag-2015-86-en#page5\">more money on tertiary education, as a percent of GDP, than any other OECD country<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keepeek.com\/Digital-Asset-Management\/oecd\/education\/education-at-a-glance-2015\/united-states_eag-2015-86-en#page7\">85% of US college students receive scholarships<\/a>, grants or loans to fund higher education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Admission to Danish universities depends upon passage of potentially many exams, and starting your study program path in high school (such as in science or engineering), and passing an comprehensive exam at the end of each year in college, in order to continue to the next year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHY DO DENMARK AND SOME EU COUNTRIES OFFER TUITION FREE COLLEGE?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The economic value of college degree is low.\u00a0 <strong>In Denmark, a college degree adds little value to one&#8217;s income <em>[just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keepeek.com\/Digital-Asset-Management\/oecd\/education\/education-at-a-glance-2015\/denmark_eag-2015-52-en#page5\">11% per 2015 OECD report<\/a>, Table A6.1a]<\/em>; in the U.S. a college degree adds an average of 86% versus a high school diploma. As of 2019, the U.S. Federal Reserve says it is typically<a href=\"https:\/\/fredblog.stlouisfed.org\/2018\/07\/is-college-still-worth-it\/\"> about 80% more income<\/a>.<br><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In Denmark&#8217;s equality economy, there is small financial incentive to attend college, hence, Denmark has to pay students to attend college.\u00a0<\/strong><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;In the U.S., earnings for tertiary graduates are 86% higher on average than those for people with only secondary education, and in Hungary they are more than double. At the other end of the scale, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/general\/educationlevelsrisinginoecdcountriesbutlowattainmentstillhamperssome.htm\">the difference is smallest in Denmark, where graduates earn on average 25% more than non-graduates [per OECD-much older data]<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, and Spain, where they earn 29% more&#8221; [or just 11% per 2015 OECD report]<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In the United States, the single largest factor affecting your income is your education<\/span>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/releases\/archives\/education\/cb11-153.html\">According to the United States Census<\/a><blockquote><p>According to a new U.S. Census Bureau study, education levels had more effect on earnings over a 40-year span in the workforce than any other demographic factor, such as gender, race and Hispanic origin.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>The Census says that in the U.S. <em>education has a five-times larger impact on earnings than any other demographic factor.<\/em> Obviously, this is not the case in Denmark, which necessarily has to pay students to attend college.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DEMOGRAPHICS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Several EU countries have experienced negative native population growth rates, including Denmark. Most countries use shorter college terms than the U.S., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/education\/us-falls-in-global-ranking-of-young-adults-who-finish-college\/2011\/08\/22\/gIQAAsU3OK_story.html\">partly to inflate their ranking<\/a> on charts like this. Because of differences in how a college degree and how the population is defined, different surveys produce different percentages and rankings. Even when the surveys are done by the same organization! Percentage measures of all adults age 25-64 are also biased by the population age distribution because far more young are now attending college than did the older population when they were young. A country with an older population will appear to have lower college attainment while a country with a younger population will appear to have a higher college attainment, even if both have the same percentage of young people graduating from college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keepeek.com\/Digital-Asset-Management\/oecd\/education\/education-at-a-glance-2015\/denmark_eag-2015-52-en#page5\">newer OECD chart <\/a>says Denmark has 36% tertiary degree completion but that a Bachelor&#8217;s degree adds just 11% to the salary versus a secondary school graduate (A6.1a shown as 111%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another OECD <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keepeek.com\/Digital-Asset-Management\/oecd\/education\/education-at-a-glance-2015_eag-2015-en#page41\">report <\/a>Table A1.a says Denmark has a 31% Bachelor\/Masters\/Doctoral completion in the age group 25-64 and the U.S. has 34%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calculated Risk Blog created a new chart with the latest data through 2019, for those age 25 and later.
