{"id":7847,"date":"2019-01-22T18:15:53","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T18:15:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/socialpanic.org\/?p=7847"},"modified":"2019-01-22T18:15:53","modified_gmt":"2019-01-22T18:15:53","slug":"the-cherry-picking-method-of-propaganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coldstreams.com\/social\/2019\/01\/22\/the-cherry-picking-method-of-propaganda\/","title":{"rendered":"The &#8220;cherry picking&#8221; method of propaganda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Cherry picking&#8221; refers to selecting only the data or results that are favorable for one&#8217;s position while intentionally ignoring that which unfavorable.<\/p>\n<p>The Marist\/NPR\/PBS political poll results from January are available <a href=\"http:\/\/maristpoll.marist.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/NPR_PBS-NewsHour_Marist-Poll-USA-NOS-and-Tables_1901141631-1.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The poll found that 45% of those polled &#8220;strongly disapprove&#8221;of Trump and 54% either disapprove or strongly disapprove.<\/li>\n<li>57% of those polled say they will definitely vote against Trump in 2020. 91% of Democrats and 62% of independents\u00a0 (the largest &#8220;party&#8221; in the country) fall into this category.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Trump found one positive item in the poll and cherry picked that result to share on Twitter:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/coldstreams.com\/social\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Capture.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7849\" src=\"https:\/\/coldstreams.com\/social\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Capture.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>PBS has more to say about the poll results <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/57-percent-of-voters-say-they-wont-support-trump-in-2020\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cherry picking&#8221; can be an effective means of propaganda messaging because for many &#8220;What You See Is All There Is&#8221;. Those seeing the message are likely unaware of the rest of the details of the poll. When the full set of data is presented, the propaganda message falls flat &#8211; but most people will never see the full data set.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, propaganda is targeting your fast acting &#8220;System 1&#8221; gut level response. Doing actual analysis of data uses your more complex &#8220;System 2&#8221; rational thinking. Most people instantly respond intuitively and will not give the quote serious thought.
