{"id":6441,"date":"2018-07-29T02:08:47","date_gmt":"2018-07-29T02:08:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/socialpanic.org\/?p=6441"},"modified":"2018-07-29T02:08:47","modified_gmt":"2018-07-29T02:08:47","slug":"mean-world-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coldstreams.com\/social\/2018\/07\/29\/mean-world-syndrome\/","title":{"rendered":"Mean world syndrome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At a local comic con, of all places, a cosplayer and recent sociology graduate introduced me to the term &#8220;mean world syndrome&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mean world syndrome is a term coined by George Gerbner to describe a phenomenon whereby violence-related content of mass media makes viewers believe that the world is more dangerous than it actually is.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mean_world_syndrome\">Mean world syndrome &#8211; Wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>She says sociology, as a field, suffers from mean world syndrome as all they do today is study things that are mean or sad.<\/p>\n<p>Mean world syndrome is related to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hypodermic_needle_model\">hypodermic needle theory<\/a>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The &#8220;magic bullet&#8221; or &#8220;hypodermic needle theory&#8221; of direct influence effects was based on early observations of the effect of mass media, as used by <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Nazi propaganda\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nazi_propaganda\">Nazi propaganda<\/a> and the effects of <a title=\"Hollywood\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hollywood\">Hollywood<\/a> in the 1930s and 1940s.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hypodermic_needle_model#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> People were assumed to be &#8220;uniformly controlled by their biologically based &#8216;instincts&#8217; and that they react more or less uniformly to whatever &#8216;stimuli&#8217; came along&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hypodermic_needle_model#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> The &#8220;Magic Bullet&#8221; theory graphically assumes that the media&#8217;s message is a bullet fired from the &#8220;media gun&#8221; into the viewer&#8217;s &#8220;head&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hypodermic_needle_model#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> Similarly, the &#8220;Hypodermic Needle Model&#8221; uses the same idea of the &#8220;shooting&#8221; paradigm. <strong>It suggests that the media injects its messages straight into the passive audience.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hypodermic_needle_model#cite_note-:0-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> This passive audience is immediately affected by these messages. The public essentially cannot escape from the media&#8217;s influence, and is therefore considered a &#8220;sitting duck&#8221;.<\/strong><sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_4-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hypodermic_needle_model#cite_note-:0-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the pre-21st century, most propaganda messaging was large scale, targeting entire groups through mass media.<\/p>\n<p>In the 21st century, we have social media and online tracking systems that enable the target of messages to individuals &#8211; which has brought some renewed interest in the &#8220;hypodermic needle&#8221; concept as modern propaganda injects messages into individuals.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The difference is that today&#8217;s massive databases allow for the mass customization of messages.
