The NY Times just made that up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">From <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TheAthletic?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TheAthletic<\/a>: Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham doubled down Wednesday on comments she made in a recently published ESPN article, saying it\u2019s \u201ccommon sense\u201d to bar transgender athletes from competing in women\u2019s sports. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TNhKA0172g\">https:\/\/t.co\/TNhKA0172g<\/a><\/p>&mdash; The New York Times (@nytimes) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nytimes\/status\/2080341437992808914?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 23, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>She said \u201cbiological men\u201d (not the NYT\u2019s paraphrase of \u201ctransgender athletes\u201d).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the July 21, 2026 ESPN profile that started this, Sophie Cunningham\u2019s direct quote was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I\u2019m like, \u2018I never once said that.\u2019 I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, <strong>or young girls in sport who shouldn\u2019t have to go against biological men<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York Times \/ The Athletic post paraphrases her later comments (the \u201ccommon sense\u201d doubling-down after the Fever-Sun game) as supporting a ban on \u201ctransgender athletes.\u201d She did not use that phrase in the original statement; she used \u201cbiological men.\u201d When reporters asked her about it the next day, she stood by the earlier remarks: \u201cI said what I said. I think it\u2019s kind of common sense\u2026 I stand on what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Multiple outlets (LA Times, USA Today, IndyStar, etc.) accurately report the \u201cbiological men\u201d wording from the ESPN piece and note that she reiterated the same stance without softening it to the media\u2019s preferred terminology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NY Times, however, just made up a quote.
