Kaohly Vang Her stated, \u201cI am illegal in this country. My parents are illegal here in this country,\u201d aiming to evoke empathy during a vote on healthcare access for undocumented adults.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This sparked public confusion and media scrutiny, but Her later clarified, \u201cI\u2019m a citizen,\u201d explaining that her family\u2019s refugee status was expedited through a claimed familial connection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Legal status confirmed: Multiple sources, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox9.com\/news\/state-lawmakers-my-family-broke-law-come-here-causes-social-media-stir\">including FOX 9<\/a> and Minnesota Reformer, affirmed that Her is a documented immigrant and U.S. citizen. It would be illegal for a non-citizen to serve in the Minnesota Legislature.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox9.com\/news\/state-lawmakers-my-family-broke-law-come-here-causes-social-media-stir\">Minnesota Rep. But he is not a citizen and must be a citizen to vote and hold office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-15272511\/minneapolis-mayor-jacob-frey-backlash-speech-foreign-language.html\">Woke re-elected Minneapolis mayor faces backlash after giving victory speech in a foreign language | Daily Mail Online<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mayor, who is American, gave parts of the speech in the language of Somalia &#8211; about 25,000 residents are immigrants from Somalia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>7% of Minneapolis residents speak Spanish<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3% speak Somali<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2% speak Hmong<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1% speak Vietnamese<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>He did not make any comments in Spanish, however, nor in Hmong.
