{"id":15753,"date":"2024-06-29T22:55:55","date_gmt":"2024-06-29T22:55:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/social.coldstreams.com\/?p=15753"},"modified":"2024-06-30T04:54:29","modified_gmt":"2024-06-30T04:54:29","slug":"media-expansive-definition-of-homesteading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coldstreams.com\/social\/2024\/06\/29\/media-expansive-definition-of-homesteading\/","title":{"rendered":"Media: Expansive definition of homesteading"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I&#8217;m so old, I remember when homesteading meant <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240118104751\/https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/why-homesteading-is-growing-trend-with-millenials-2023-9\">you took a plot of land, likely built a home on it, and began doing some agriculture<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/homesteading\">Old definition<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>the act or practice of acquiring, settling on, or occupying land under a homestead law (see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/homestead%20law\">HOMESTEAD LAW&nbsp;sense 2<\/a>); <em>Homesteading<\/em>&nbsp;was a minor factor in farm formation; most farmers purchased their land.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/homesteading\">New Definition<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>the act or practice of living frugally or self-sufficiently (as on a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/homestead#h1\">homestead<\/a>) especially by growing and preserving food<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Homesteading is growing: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/06\/29\/homesteading-farming-gardening-growth\">Homesteading appealing to more first-time farmers (axios.com)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>What they&#8217;re saying:<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;You don&#8217;t have to be Laura Ingalls Wilder to be a homesteader. You can grow tomatoes on your balcony,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.berea.edu\/academics\/departments-programs\/peace-and-social-justice\/faculty-staff\/dr-jason-strange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jason Stange<\/a>, author of &#8220;Shelter From the Machine: Homesteaders in the Age of Capitalism,&#8221; tells us.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But the growth is due to redefining homesteading to include those who have their own vegetable garden &#8211; or even just some potted tomatoes in the window sill. Or those who just <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240118104751\/https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/why-homesteading-is-growing-trend-with-millenials-2023-9\">bake their own bread<\/a>! By that definition, I have been homesteading much of my life!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The definition also seems to have added &#8220;preppers&#8221; &#8211; which range from those doing reasonable storage of food and other needs to accommodate a disaster, to those prepping for Armaged\u00f3n and the end of life as we know it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing tomatoes on your balcony might not be what you are thinking of when you hear the term &#8220;homesteading&#8221;! By the definition, all 3 of my adult &#8220;kids&#8221; are homesteaders. Two of them live on an acre or more of land and have huge vegetable gardens; the third lives in an suburban big city but also grows many vegetables in their yard, and has egg laying chickens too. I don&#8217;t think of any of them as &#8220;homesteaders&#8221; though!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no estimate on how many people are &#8220;homesteading&#8221;: <a href=\"https:\/\/homesteadersofamerica.com\/a-look-at-the-homesteaders-of-america-community-in-2022-statistics\/\">A Look At the Homesteaders of America Community in 2022 (Data &amp; Statistics) &#8211; Homesteaders of America<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This &#8220;growth of homesteading&#8221; seems to be primarily due to a redefinition of &#8220;homesteading&#8221; include vegetable gardens, canning fruits and vegetables, and baking your own bread.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What do you think of when you hear that someone is &#8220;homesteading&#8221;?
