{"id":14739,"date":"2023-11-26T00:24:20","date_gmt":"2023-11-26T00:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/social.coldstreams.com\/?p=14739"},"modified":"2024-12-10T23:10:26","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T23:10:26","slug":"media-when-nbc-news-was-caught-manufacturing-the-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coldstreams.com\/social\/2023\/11\/26\/media-when-nbc-news-was-caught-manufacturing-the-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Media: When NBC News was caught manufacturing the news"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dateline_NBC#General_Motors_vs._NBC\">Dateline NBC &#8211; Wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>On November 17, 1992,&nbsp;<strong><i>Dateline NBC<\/i>&nbsp;aired an hour-long investigative report titled &#8220;Waiting to Explode,&#8221; which focused on allegations that&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"General Motors Corporation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General_Motors_Corporation\">General Motors<\/a>&#8216;&nbsp;<i>Rounded-Line<\/i>&nbsp;<a title=\"Chevrolet C\/K (third generation)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevrolet_C\/K_(third_generation)#Sidesaddle_fuel_tank_controversy\">Chevrolet C\/K<\/a>-Series&nbsp;<a title=\"Pickup truck\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pickup_truck\">pickup trucks<\/a>&nbsp;exploded upon impact<\/strong> when involved in collisions due to the poor design of the vehicle model&#8217;s fuel tanks.&nbsp;<strong><i>Dateline<\/i><span class=\"nowrap\">&#8216;<\/span>s footage showed a sample of a low-speed accident in which the fuel tank exploded; the explosion during the crash test would later be discovered to have been staged by an expert witness for hire against GM, Bruce Enz of The Institute for Safety Analysis.<\/strong> Enz used&nbsp;<a title=\"Incendiary device\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Incendiary_device\">incendiary devices<\/a>&nbsp;and a poorly fitted gas cap to create the impression of a dangerous vehicle.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dateline_NBC#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The program did not disclose the fact that the accident was staged.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dateline_NBC#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GM hired investigators from&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Failure Analysis Associates\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Failure_Analysis_Associates\">Failure Analysis Associates<\/a>&nbsp;(FaAA, now&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Exponent, Inc\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exponent,_Inc\">Exponent<\/a>) to study the footage; FaAA investigators discovered while reviewing the video that smoke had actually started to expel from the fuel tank six frames before the actual impact occurred. Acting on a tip from someone involved with the&nbsp;<i>Dateline<\/i>&nbsp;crash test, investigators with FaAA searched through 22 junkyards in&nbsp;<a title=\"Indiana\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indiana\">Indiana<\/a>&nbsp;before finding the charred wreckage of the GM pickups.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dateline_NBC#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was also later revealed that the&nbsp;<i>Dateline<\/i>&nbsp;report had been dishonest about the fuel tanks rupturing and the alleged 30 miles per hour (48&nbsp;km\/h) speed at which the collision was conducted. The actual speed was found to be higher than stated, around 40 miles per hour (64&nbsp;km\/h), and after&nbsp;<a title=\"Industrial radiography\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Industrial_radiography\">x-ray<\/a>&nbsp;examination of the fuel tanks from the C\/K pickups used in the televised collision, it was found that they had not ruptured and were intact.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ReferenceJ_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dateline_NBC#cite_note-ReferenceJ-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-ReferenceK_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dateline_NBC#cite_note-ReferenceK-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;GM subsequently filed an anti-defamation\/<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Libel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Libel\">libel<\/a>&nbsp;lawsuit against NBC after conducting an extensive investigation. On February 8, 1993, after announcing the lawsuit, GM conducted a highly publicized point-by-point rebuttal in the Product Exhibit Hall of the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"General Motors Building\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General_Motors_Building\">General Motors Building<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a title=\"Detroit\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Detroit\">Detroit<\/a>&nbsp;that lasted nearly two hours.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dateline_NBC#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dateline_NBC#cite_note-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The General Motors lawsuit and the subsequent settlement were arguably the most devastating blows for NBC in a series of reputation damaging incidents during the 1990s and early 2000s. Within NBC,&nbsp;<a title=\"Michael Gartner\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Gartner\">Michael Gartner<\/a>, who resigned under pressure shortly after the incident, was the source for much of the blame. NBC News President&nbsp;<a title=\"Reuven Frank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reuven_Frank\">Reuven Frank<\/a>&nbsp;stated Gartner was hired in 1988, despite having no background in television news, in an attempt to satisfy parent company&nbsp;<a title=\"General Electric\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General_Electric\">General Electric<\/a>, by replacing current journalists with cheaper, less experienced reporters and producers.<sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dateline_NBC#cite_note-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the resignation of the news division&#8217;s president Gartner, three&nbsp;<i>Dateline NBC<\/i>&nbsp;producers were dismissed as a result of the incident and the findings of the resulting investigation: executive producer Jeff Diamond, senior producer David Rummel, and Robert Read, producer of the report on the pickups. Michele Gillen, the correspondent involved in the segment, was transferred to NBC&#8217;s Miami&nbsp;<a title=\"Owned-and-operated station\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Owned-and-operated_station\">owned-and-operated station<\/a>&nbsp;<a title=\"WTVJ\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WTVJ\">WTVJ<\/a>, where she became an anchor of the station&#8217;s evening newscasts.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Younger persons are not aware that professional journalists have a long history of manufacturing the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230411114810\/https:\/\/buffalonews.com\/news\/nbc-denies-device-ignited-gm-pickup-fire\/article_0002ae59-d767-58fa-b105-25440dd5ce77.html\">NBC hired a group of non-experts<\/a> (no engineers on staff) &#8220;institute&#8221; and had them stage the fake crash and fire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NBC &#8220;settled the law suit&#8221;: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1993\/02\/10\/us\/nbc-settles-truck-crash-lawsuit-saying-test-was-inappropriate.html\">NBC Settles Truck Crash Lawsuit, Saying Test Was &#8216;Inappropriate&#8217; &#8211; The New York Times (nytimes.com)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>NBC acknowledged that in the demonstration it used &#8220;sparking devices,&#8221; or tiny rockets, strapped to the bottom of one of the trucks, to insure that it would ignite if its gas tank leaked.
