{"id":1236,"date":"2012-09-18T09:25:04","date_gmt":"2012-09-18T17:25:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coldstreams.com\/video\/?p=1236"},"modified":"2012-09-18T09:25:04","modified_gmt":"2012-09-18T17:25:04","slug":"some-sounds-of-yellowstone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coldstreams.com\/3d\/2012\/09\/18\/some-sounds-of-yellowstone\/","title":{"rendered":"Some sounds of #Yellowstone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Grand_prismatic_spring.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured alignright\" title=\"Thermophiles produce some of the bright colors...\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/f\/f5\/Grand_prismatic_spring.jpg\/300px-Grand_prismatic_spring.jpg\" alt=\"Thermophiles produce some of the bright colors...\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" \/><\/a>Last year, I made a short video featuring the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7Ee4-MDmXHU&amp;list=UUKyYIZ6uH4ml2WHnWkm2t5Q&amp;index=56&amp;feature=plcp\">Thermal Sounds of Yellowstone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This fall, I attempted to recreate parts of that video in 3D and stereo sound (rather than the monaural recording of last year).<\/p>\n<p>Here are some samples of what I recorded this year, both uploaded to the blog as MP3 files:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/coldstreams.com\/video\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/2012YellowstoneDragonsMouth.mp3\">2012YellowstoneDragonsMouth<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; the Dragon&#8217;s Mouth thermal vent\/geyser inside a short cave at the Mud Geyser Basin.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/coldstreams.com\/video\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/2012YellowstonePaintPots.mp3\">2012YellowstonePaintPots<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; the sound of the Artist&#8217;s Paint Pots<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/coldstreams.com\/video\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/2012YellowstoneBlueMud.mp3\">2012YellowstoneBlueMud<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; the Blue Mud Steam Vent sounds like a washing machine!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Recording sound is hard work. First, I needed to be out early &#8211; or late &#8211; to avoid the crowds and people talking and walking on the boardwalks, making noise. Second, even then I often had to wait for quite some time until the area was free of visitors (fortunately, not all visitors are noisy so sometimes I recorded when people were nearby!). Third, to get sound like this I used two 18 inch long shot gun mics, through a Beachtek audio mixer, and then into my little Canon HF M301 consumer camcorders (set up for 3D).<\/p>\n<p>A photo of the set up looks like this &#8211; two shot guns on top (home made wind muffs), the Beachtek mixer, attached to a mostly home made 3D camera mount.
