Salesforce, San Francisco’s largest private employer, will permanently allow most workers to stay home for two or more days a week, a major shift that could dampen downtown’s economic recovery well beyond the coronavirus pandemic.

Twitter and many others are doing the same. Downtowns are going to have a very hard time recovering from this shift.

Just drove through my modest sized rural town (30,000). One of the 5 grocery stores has closed. Perhaps 25-30% of the main downtown thoroughfare businesses are gone and their spaces vacant. The loss of these businesses will likely have negative public health consequences.
